An Observation
by Marla Louise Baldwin
Saturday night Marla was out at a bar with a mixture of
clientele, straight and gay, male and female. While talking to a friend, a woman danced up
to us and made a nice comment about my eyes. My response was interesting, for it was what
I would describe as typically 'male'! Immediately, I wondered what the hell Marla had
done. And why?
Some thought on an answer. Experience teaches us responses
for our life. A person is built upon her experiences. But this is not a solid wall of
experience but a mosaic with holes that may be filled in the future or maybe never be
filled. Normally, especially in the young person, if one needs to respond to a situation,
and there is a hole representing that response, we just search further. And for many of
us, our female selves are young with many holes in our experience and response patterns.
But unlike the young person, there is an entirely experience pattern sitting in the
background, that of the male. In my case, I had never had to respond to a pickup line from
a female as a female. I thus had no experience from which to respond and instead of
searching further, Mark' response patterns came to the surface.
What does this mean? Maybe just an awareness and
understanding of how our past or male selves can be lurking in the background waiting to
make itself present at some most inopportune moment. Just something to think about.
