The Force Awakens

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the day I began living full-time in my new gender. In the quarter century that followed I embraced the gender community and, in fact, led it as one of its pioneers in social media. For example, I founded the world's first open forum TG chat room on the old America Online system and held meeting every week, then twice weekly for up to fifty people. I began the first online TG newsletter called The Gender News and later The Subversive. I founded this web site, the very first TG support web suite ever, way back in 1994. It is here I published the first day-by-day as-it-happens transition diary, which is still available here as well as in six individual volumes in paperback and for Kindle. And I even started several message boards which later spun off and became the venerable Beginning Life interactive community today.
But after many years of taking point in the online world, I had resolved the last of my gender-related issues – seriously, you can do that - and I came to realize it was time to end my diary and put those times behind me. In truth, at the same time I was in transition, I developed the Dramatica Theory of Narrative Structure with my partner Chris, and he and his other partner Steve turned it into the most revolutionary best-selling story development software ever, also called Dramatica.
Then, while still writing my diary, I expanded this narrative theory to reflect back on the real world - the way individuals think, feel, deal with problems and interact in groups. Chris and I then spent years developing the Mental Relativity theory of psychology and documenting what we had discovered.
After directing two low budget movies just before transition, I left a ten year career in the movie business as a writer/producer/director to become a full-time Story Guru: a narrative analyst and teacher of creative writing. Thousands of writers from around the world now use my methods to write their novels and screenplays, including many who have won major awards.
For the last five years, I've also been working with a variety of government agencies helps to define the motivations of and project the likely behavior of individuals of ill-intent, from lone wolves to hostile nations. This is, perhaps, some of my most fulfilling work.
And yet, my true joys are photography in the style of Ansel Adams and original musical compositions (I've been a composer since age nine). And my true loves are my children, Keith and Mindi, their spouses, my new grandchild, my wife Mary, with whom I am still technically married (we're great friends) and my soul mate, Teresa, with whom I have lived for the last seventeen years.
By now you may be asking why, with all that going on and so much water under the bridge, why I am starting this blog/new diary after all this time. The answer is simple - while transgender issues hardly ever flit across my mind, that whole first part of my life is sort of hard to talk about with folks in everyday life since it brings transition into the present. So aside from a few un-bothered family members and a few close friends, the first 38 years of my life never existed - they've been cut from all potential conversation and redacted from the karmic record.
And that's a pisser. Because those years were lived by me. And things happened in them. And stuff had meaning that continues to this day. So, I've recently decided that it's about time I found me a place to blather on and you're it.
Therefore, let me inaugurate this new stream of unexpurgated consciousness and bid you all good luck with it.
